Aptitude Training Course

Lecture and Tutorial course conducted by Dr Steven Holding

 

CATHAY PACIFIC, EMIRATES and other International Airlines use mathematics and mental calculation tests as part of the pilot and cadet selection procedure. Tests are done without the aid of a electronic calculator. This course is designed to help you to improve your speed, accuracy and confidence in the test. Aeronautical Knowledge is also important (depending on your entry level). Course duration is 2 full days in class, followed by home study and another 2 days in class. If required free tutorials are also available in Brisbane.

  IMPORTANT:

You will be provided with after course study material and individual assistance if necessary. The average student will need 4 to 6 weeks home study to prepare properly. Note that the mathematics preparation may take longer depending on your previous experience and high school results.

  • Rounding and Approximations for quick Mental Calculations
  • Streamlining Calculations and conversions using Fractions
  • Percentages and Ratios.
  • Pattern sequences
  • Number Sequences
  • Basic Trigonometry
  • Aeronautical applications of Trigonometry
  • Speed, Distance, Time, Fuel Burn and Flight Planning Calculations

SPECIALISED COURSE CONTENT

 

The following Topics are relevant to Cathay Pacific and Emirates applicants with ATPL qualification. Extra course material will be supplied to cover these topics.

UNIT 1:

Basic Trigonometry, 1 in 60 rule, Drift Angle, Navigation using Latitude and Longitude, Fuel flow, TAS, GS, and Specific Ground Range calculations, Climb and Glide Performance, Takeoff and Landing Performance, Dynamic Pressure, Lift Formula, Coefficient of Lift, Coefficient of Drag, Induced Drag, Parasite Drag

UNIT 2:

Speed of Sound, TAS and Mach Number calculations, Effect of Altitude upon Power and Thrust, Momentum and Ram effect, Critical Mach Number, Compression Drag.

UNIT 3:

Stall speed, minimum drag speed, best angle of climb speed, best rate of climb speed, best endurance speed, best range speed, maximum cruise speed, Bank Angle, Radius of turn and Load Factor.
